Sony's Digital Media Extender (DMeX), offers a digital connection for the BRAVIA Internet Video Link module, which allows users to view select Internet video, including high-definition content, from the comfort of their living room from providers like AOL, Yahoo! and Grouper, as well as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony BMG Music. The module mounts on the back of a compatible Sony television and connects directly to the Internet via an existing broadband Ethernet connection (3 Mbps or higher) without the use of a personal computer. The feature will give users access to select Internet video, music videos, movie trailers, user generated videos and RSS feeds without additional charges.

Sony Bravia HDTVs offer the following inputs: two high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) inputs, a pair of component video inputs for set-top boxes and standard-definition gaming consoles, one AV input with composite and S-video ports for connecting to older consumer electronics gear, a second composite-only connector, and a VGA-style input to use the TV as a computer display with resolutions of up to 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Audio options include stereo analog and optical digital outputs. Finally, there's a connection for Sony's add-on Bravia Internet Video Link.

Sony offers its unique Bravia device, a videotape-size box that attaches to the back of the TV set via USB or HDMI cable. (The box itself features an extra USB port and HDMI switcher to make up for that fact that Bravia hogs one of the set's precious few inputs.) Unfortunately, the box doesn't feature Wi-Fi connectivity, so you need to plug it directly into your modem or router with an Ethernet cable.

The XMB is a MENU of Bravia features and input sources displayed on the TV screen. The XMB is an easy way to select programming and adjust settings on the Bravia TV. Press the HOME button on the remote control to access the XMB.

Bravia's internet connection delivers only Sony-authorized content from the Internet. When the service first launched, many of the short clips from AOL (TWX), Yahoo! (YHOO), and other Sony partners were not very interesting. But now, new content is appearing at a steady clip. With some programs, commercials and other extraneous material have been edited out.

Sony is only the second major LCD maker to introduce direct online connectivity without a computer (Hewlett-Packard's (HP) MediaSmart line being the other, with an even smaller selection of video content). So between Bravia and other cutting-edge features, Sony has succeeded in giving consumers more compelling reasons to choose its brand over others.
